Interestingly, I think that we cannot achieve happiness without experiencing other emotions like sadness, anger, grief and fear. Each of these emotions, as acupuncturists, we assess in each individual to determine how smoothly and fully a patient can experience and express each of these. Health, by one measure, is the capacity to experience each of these and move fluidly onto the next. In some ways we could say that the capacity to have joy and happiness is given by the experience of these other emotions.
I love this quotation. I wrote it down months ago and the piece of paper keeps popping up in pile after pile each time I clean off my desk and move paper around.
Life really can be this simple. If all we are looking for is to achieve happiness then we can welcome every other emotion as a pathway to future joy. If all we are looking for is happiness, we can do and be whatever and whoever we want when we grow up - we can choose our life's path based on what brings us joy.
Write down happy. Now draw, list or dream up what happy looks like for you....
I'll bet its beautiful.
